The Complete Installation Guide for Water Softeners: A Hard Water Solution

RiverSoft | 24 February 2025

Water quality is a critical factor in ensuring a healthy and efficient household. Hard water, which contains high levels of calcium and magnesium, can cause significant issues, from hair and skin health to scaling on fixtures and inefficient appliance performance. This issue affects plumbing, laundry, and even personal care routines.

Water softener for taps offer an effective solution by neutralizing these minerals and delivering softened water. This guide explains the installation of water softener, its benefits, and how it improves the efficiency of bathroom fixtures.

Understanding Hard Water

Common Signs of Hard Water in Your Home

  1. White, chalky deposits (limescale) on taps and showerheads.

  2. Soap that doesn’t lather easily and leaves residue.

  3. Stiff, scratchy laundry even after washing.

  4. Frequent appliance breakdowns due to scale buildup.

Impact of Hard Water on Health and Appliances

  • Skin and Hair: Hard water can damage hair and cause skin dryness and irritation

  • Plumbing and Appliances: Scale buildup clogs pipes and reduces the efficiency of appliances like water heaters and dishwashers

  • Cleaning: Hard water increases soap usage

Benefits of Using a Water Softener for Hard Water

  1. Water softener installation can be an easy process and can be done at home without any professional appointment.

  2. Provides softer water for healthier skin and hair.

  3. Installing water softener before appliances can improve the lifespan and also decrease breakdown. It can also reduce energy costs by improving appliance efficiency.

  4. Improves cleaning outcomes, leaving no residue on surfaces.

  2. Measure the space available to ensure the softener fits.

Step-by-Step Installation Process

Follow these easy steps for a hassle-free installation experience:

Installation in Tap

1. Remove the aerator from your tap

  • Check if your tap has an aerator.

  • Remove the aerator by hand or use a plier if it is stuck.

  • Clean the inner threads on the tap.

2. Select the right adaptor and fix the adaptor to the tap

  • Check if your tap requires a male or female adaptor. (If unsure, contact RiverSoft customer support at +91 98862 20746 for guidance.)

  • Wrap Teflon tape around the top threads of the adaptor to ensure a secure fit and prevent leaks.

  • If using a male adaptor, place a rubber washer on top of it (not required for female adaptors).

  • Securely fix the adaptor onto the tap’s threads by turning it clockwise.

  • Ensure a tight fit without over-tightening to avoid damage.

3. Place the silicon ring & fix the filter to the tap

  • Place the silicon ring on top of the filter.

  • Fix the filter to the tap.

  • Fix the foam aerator to the outlet of the filter.

4. Check leaks & done!

  • Use additional tape to stop leakage.

  • Discoloured water may come initially for 1-2 minutes; it is just carbon dust and is not harmful.

Common Troubleshooting Tips During Installation

  • Leaks: Re-tighten fittings and check for proper alignment of pipes.

  • Discolored Water Flowing Initially:  This is normal and happens due to carbon dust from the new filter. Let the water run for 1-2 minutes until it clears.

  • The Filter Doesn't Fit the Tap: Check if your tap requires a male or female adaptor. Ensure the inner threads of the tap are clean before installation

Maintenance and Care for Water Softeners

To ensure your hard water tap filter functions effectively and lasts longer, follow these maintenance and care tips:

1. Regular Cleaning

  • Remove the filter every 2-3 weeks and rinse it under running water to clear sediment buildup.

  • Use a soft brush to clean any debris from the filter screen or aerator.

2. Replacing the Filter Cartridge

  •  Replace the filter cartridge every 4-6 months, depending on water quality and usage.

  • If you notice a significant drop in water pressure or a change in water taste/odor, replace it sooner.

3. Leak Prevention

  • Check all connections and washers regularly to ensure a proper seal.

  • Apply Teflon tape to threads if minor leaks occur.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

1. Filter is Dripping Even When Tap is Off

  • Ensure the filter is tightly secured to the tap.

  • Check the rubber washer inside the adaptor for proper placement.

  • Apply additional Teflon tape to improve the seal.

2.  Water Pressure is Too High or Too Low

  • If water pressure is too low, clean the foam aerator and check for blockages in the filter.

  • If pressure is too high, consider installing a pressure-reducing valve to protect the filter.

3. Water Tastes or Smells Unusual

  • Let the water run for a few minutes to flush out any trapped carbon dust.

  • If the taste persists, replace the filter cartridge as it may be clogged.

4. Filter Comes Loose Frequently

  • Ensure the filter is properly threaded onto the tap.

  • Use Teflon tape on the tap threads to provide a better grip.

5. Water Flow Stops Completely

  • Check if the filter is clogged with sediment or debris.

  • Remove and clean the filter, or replace the cartridge if necessary.
