Every shower filter cartridge has a recommended replacement timeline of around four to six months. Why?
This estimate is based on tests conducted on water with consistent quality, low sediment, and moderate hardness. However, water quality can vary significantly across Indian cities and households, so the cartridge lifespan can be shorter than the suggested six-month period.
Replacement Frequency Based on Water Source
-
Municipal water: If your home uses a municipal supply with moderate hardness and chlorine treatment, a cartridge usually lasts 4-6 months with normal daily use.
-
Borewell or tanker water: These sources usually contain higher content of minerals and suspended particles, causing the filter media to saturate much faster, and you may need to replace the cartridge every 3 to 4 months.
Moreover, how many people use the shower daily also determines how often you have to replace the cartridge. For example, a single person showering daily puts minimal demand on the filter and can comfortably get 6 months out of a cartridge. In a family of four, daily usage is much higher, so more water flows through the filter media, which means the cartridge saturates faster and will likely need a replacement every 3-4 months.
How Does Water Hardness Affect Shower Filter Cartridge Life?
Water hardness directly affects how long a cartridge lasts. The higher the hardness, the faster the filter media saturates. That’s why we have designed two different shower filters for different hardness levels, so the cartridge performs as expected for specific water conditions.
-
SF-15 Shower Filter – Designed for homes with normal to moderate water hardness.
-
Bliss-15 Shower Filter – Designed for areas with high water hardness. Built with a higher concentration of filtration media, it handles heavier mineral loads without saturating quickly.
How To Know When It's Time to Replace Your Shower Filter Cartridge?
Here are the clear signs that you need to replace your shower filter cartridge:
-
Your hair feels rough or dry after washing.
-
The water pressure from the shower suddenly feels slower.
-
Soap, shampoo, or conditioner doesn’t lather as well as it used to.
-
White limescale begins appearing on taps, showerheads, and bathroom tiles.
Apart from these signs, if you get a musty smell from your bathroom or showerhead, don't ignore it. It usually means bacterial growth has started inside the cartridge. At that point, replace the cartridge immediately.
What If You Don’t Replace Your Shower Filter Cartridge Regularly?
The filtration media inside a cartridge have a limited capacity to trap hard water minerals, chlorine byproducts, and organic particles. Once that capacity is reached, these substances pass through freely. Here's what changes when that happens:
-
Hard water minerals like calcium and magnesium become active in your shower water, leaving your hair dry and your skin tight after every wash.
-
Chlorine passes through unfiltered, stripping natural oils from your scalp and skin the same way it did before you installed the filter.
-
Trapped organic matter inside a saturated cartridge creates conditions for bacterial growth, which then re-enters your shower water.
In other words, at this point, the cartridge isn’t protecting you anymore, it’s working against you.
That said, fixing it is simple - replace the shower filter cartridge. You can check out our SFC-15 replacement cartridge. It uses a 15-stage filtration system to reduce chlorine, dilute hard water minerals, and restore the water quality.

Conclusion
A shower filter is only effective when the cartridge is replaced regularly. If you delay the cartridge replacement, hard water minerals and chlorine will flow straight into your shower water. That said, six months is the general recommendation for cartridge replacement; the actual replacement frequency depends on your water source, household size, and the hardness level in your area.
If you notice any of the signs mentioned in this blog, don't wait for the six-month mark; replace your filter cartridge immediately.
